Andrew Flintoff Named Head Coach of Sydney Thunder in BBL

June 2, 2026

Sydney Thunder have officially confirmed Andrew Flintoff as their new head coach for the Big Bash League (BBL). The club’s General Manager, Trent Copeland, described it as an enormous moment for the club and the BBL.

Flintoff, 48, signed a two-year deal with the Sydney-based franchise. He beat competition from Shane Watson and Dan Christian to get the role.

Replacing Trevor Bayliss

Flintoff takes over from former England ODI World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss, who departed Thunder after five years at the helm, including reaching the BBL final in 2024-25.

However, Thunder finished last in the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons. After Bayliss left, Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said that the club would search for a “world-class T20 coach” and have landed on Flintoff.

Flintoff’s Coaching Background

Flintoff will coach in the BBL for the first time, having only had prior T20 coaching experience in a two-year stint as Northern Superchargers coach in The Hundred in 2024 and 2025, finishing fourth and third respectively.

He has also been England Lions coach in the last 12 months, including leading the Lions on a tour of Australia last summer that shadowed the Ashes tour. He also worked briefly with England’s white-ball sides as a consultant during Matthew Mott’s tenure.

His History With the BBL

Flintoff has experience in the BBL as a player, having played one season with Brisbane Heat in 2014-15. He only played seven matches with the Heat, but they ended up being the last team he represented in his 20-year professional career.

The Squad He Will Work With

Flintoff said the mix of experienced players like David Warner, Chris Green, and Daniel Sams will combine well with exciting youngsters such as Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes, and Tanveer Sangha.

“I can’t wait to get over there and get started,” Flintoff said after the appointment. “I’m looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, you look at the players, you look at the support, and I think there’s something really big to build on.”

Possible Schedule Conflict

His appointment to Thunder will likely impact his involvement with the England Lions tour to South Africa in December, which will clash with the start of the BBL.

However, it is understood that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) would be willing to release Flintoff early from that assignment to allow him to start with the Thunder.
